The West Highland Way - Photographs of Scotland - The
West Highland Way makes its way through some of the finest
scenery in Scotland and the section of the way which crosses
the edge of Rannoch Moor is probably the most serious
part of the highland walk. The West Highland Way at this
point is a high level and exposed track which takes you
north to Kingshouse Hotel in Glencoe, there is no shelter
and no easy way of escape in bad weather, but it is all
the more wonderful for that. Going north from Inveroran
the West Highland Way rounds the head of Loch Tulla and
crosses the western edge of Rannoch Moor, this route was
used by the drovers heading south with their cattle to
the Tryst in Falkirk.
Stob Ghabhar- For the fitter and more experienced walker
an alternative route to Glencoe can be found by climbing
Stob Ghabhar and enjoying a classic ridge walk of 11 miles,
as I have said this is best left to those who have the
experience.
The Photograph shows Stob Ghabhar sitting above frozen
Loch Tulla. Stob Ghabhar is the most southerly peak of
the Blackmount area of Rannoch Moor. Turn left at Bridge
of Orchy and make your way along the side of Loch Tulla
to Victoria Bridge near Forest Lodge. For those of you
who have no intention of taking on a serious walk, the
drive to this point takes you in to a lovely area where
you can walk and imagine yourself in the middle of wilderness.
Then you can have lunch at the nearby Inveroran Inn a
popular stop for the walkers of the West Highland Way.
