The village of Shieldaig and Photographs of Scotland
- There are so many lovely villages to take photographs
of in Scotland, but Shieldaig is among the finest. This
photograph was taken in early morning, between the snow
showers and shows the white washed houses of the Village
with the hills of Torridon beyond. The clouds, which had
earlier covered the sky, were now being blown by the wind,
which allowed the sun to sneak through and form pools
of light on the landscape. If you are a photographer,
amateur or professional this is an area of Scotland you
will love. You will find a photograph round every corner,
if you have the time and patience to wait. Sometimes it
only takes three weeks ! Part of the joy of photographing
Scotland and her Landscape.
Shieldaig is set amidst some of the finest of Scottish
scenery, lying as it does in the mountainous region of
Torridon, in the North West. Nestled at the head of Loch
Shieldaig the village was established in 1800 and takes
its name from the Norse meaning 'Herring Bay'.
The village was built to train men as sailors to fight
during the Napoleonic Wars. To this end the British Admiralty
offered grants to attract the families and the village
prospered. The herring at that time was still plentiful
and Shieldaig had a fine fishing fleet. Today the fishing
is limited to mussels and prawns.
There is plenty of accommodation in the Village also
a campsite, make Shieldaig your base and explore the area.Take
the road for Applecross you will not be disappointed,
the views over to Skye are worth the journey alone. North
from Shieldaig and really, I mean five minutes, you will
view Ben Alligin over the waters of Upper Loch Torridon
a breathtaking view.
There are a few hidden gems in the area , drive round
to the other side of the loch and visit Diabaig, you will
be glad you did.
