The setting sun is captured in this panoramic photograph
of Oban Bay Scotland. The sun dips behind the hills of
the Isle of Mull and the Island of Kerrera and spreads
it 's evening glow over Oban Bay. You will have many opportunities
to photograph sunsets like this when you visit Scotland.
Lying on the west coast of Scotland Oban is the gateway
for the Islands of Mull , Coll , Tiree , Barra, Colonsay
and South Uist , Cal - Mac run regular ferries to the
Islands, do not forget the camera for great landscape
photographs.
These are great islands to visit but don't be in too
much of a hurry to leave Oban , the town and it 's surrounding
area has plenty to offer the visitor including the smaller
but nearer Islands of Kerrera, Seil, Luing and Lismore.
Oban harbour is sheltered by Kerrera and has to be one
of the most scenic in Scotland. The eye never tires of
viewing Oban Bay and Mull from McCaig's Tower often referred
to as McCaig's Folly. McCaig was a local banker and the
tower was built in 1897 to provide work for local stonemasons
and a lasting monument to his family.
The town is a great base from which to tour the area
, a drive north will soon find you passing through Benderloch
and Appin on the way to Glencoe . South of the town you
can visit Seil Island and cross the Clachan Bridge, the
only bridge to cross over the Atlantic.
Head inland to Loch Awe and visit the Cruachan Dam and
the serious walker in the family can scale the heights
of Ben Cruachan.
You can of course sit at the harbour and watch the ferries
arrive and depart and plan your next visit to Oban , who
knows, maybe next time you will board one.
